Birds in Flight Screenprint Workshop
Create a screenprint based very loosely on Leonardo Da Vinci’s Theory of Flight reimagined by Jairo Zaldua and Nicola Green. From a selection of ready-made designs, learn how to build up colours, layers and have a completed image to take home in this mini-print workshop. For all ages and abilities. Accompanies the Hale End Bird Sanctuary exhibition.

Benji Davies
Grandad’s Island author-illustrator Benji Davies will read and draw from his award-winning picture book at this free library event. Hear the amazing story of Grandad’s Island live and see the festival inspiration in person. Grandad’s Island won the children’s book category of the AOI World Illustration Awards, and was crowned Children’s Book of the Year at the Sainsbury’s Children’s Book Awards and has since been adapted for the stage. His first self-penned picture book The Storm Whale won the inaugural Oscar’s Book Prize and was Dutch Picture Book Of The Year 2017.

Tales on the Wing Procession Workshop
Join artist Del Taylor in a fun and colourful workshop to help prepare a flock of birds and props for the public procession which takes place on Weds 9 October 2019. You will be making bird puppets, costume and storytelling props inspired by Grandad’s Island out of an array of materials ready to take to the streets of E17. All materials provided, drop-in, no need to book.

A story telling session with a difference – listen as we share “Grandad’s Island ” in some of the various languages spoken at The Mill. This beautiful children’s book , written and illustrated by local author Benji Davies is available in translation and we are celebrating the many nationalities that come together at The Mill. TALES ON THE WING PROCESSION
Join us to help a flock of colourful birds take flight through our streets and deliver an important letter.

A procession of large birds made by members of the local community including The Winns Primary School will journey through Priory Court and along Elphinstone Road. Along the route the flock will encounter a range of playful Story Stops where there will be artwork and mini pop up performances on show. You can get involved by helping with the making in the run up to the procession (Sat 5 Oct, 10.30am, Higham Hill Library), creating something for a Story Stop, or joining us on the day for the procession. Expect making, music, movement and surprises along the way!

Sailing into Bisterne Avenue Park Workshop
Weave your story into a Story Craft created by willow artist Jane Frost, residents and Leyton Sixth Form College students. The Story Craft echoes ancient coracle making techniques. It’s upturned hull and porthole features transform into a workshop space for inventing stories, sharing memories and weaving new sculptures of creatures that might be encountered on Grandad’s Island.
