The Hale End Bird Sanctuary, Highams Park

Taking inspiration from Grandad’s parakeet friends, this show celebrates local bird species. With “Birds in Flight” screenprinting and “New Species” sculpting days (see separate listings). Exhibition opening Sat 5 October 2019, 2-4pm. See the works on show and chat to the artists, with nibbles and live musical accompaniment referencing all things flight and freedom.

The Jolly Miller, Walthamstow

Find this magnificent ship anchored in the foyer of Walthamstow Central Library after it’s Maiden Voyage through the High Street in September. Local community hub The Mill commissioned 3D artist Vanessa to construct a ship to be decorated by many apprentice decorators at The Shipyard at this year’s Walthamstow Garden Party. Throughout their summer workshops, children made birds, masks, sea creatures and exotic plants. Some of which set sail with the Jolly Miller.

The Ancestors, Chingford
Waltham Forest based artist printmaker Kirsten Schmidt has been exploring our place within the natural world. Her work includes intricate illustrations of the flora and fauna that surrounds us. Kirsten has been meeting with members of the community based around Friday Hill in Chingford and has taken stories of their ancestors and how people from their past have shaped their lives and worked them into the feathers of the birds which feature large in her work. See how her latest work explores connection, transition and protection.
