Time & Location

18 Feb 2024, 11:00 – 13:00

Walthamstow Central Library - Glass Room, High St, London E17 7JN, UK

About the event

Artists and plant experts Poppy Flint and Michael Holland will introduce you to the lesser known stories of the Lime Trees' rich history, ecology and folklore. During the session everyone will have the chance to experiment with different creative mediums such as charcoal, natural ink, collage and poetry writing. You will be supported weave what you have learnt about the trees into your own artistic design, which will in turn inspire the designs in the lighting feature.

What to wear

Please wear clothes that are suitable for using art materials such as ink, charcoal and clay.

Please wear warm, waterproof layers for being outside in February for approximately 30 minutes doing some creative and ecology activities. This will involve walking and standing. Outside you will have the opportunity to use art materials including clay and charcoal, and magnifying tools.

If it is blowing a gale or similar challenging weather, the outdoor activities will be adapted to happen in the Glass Room.

Duration

Artists are aiming to keep this workshop to 1hr50mins. Everyone will need to vacate the Glass Room by 1pm so that we can reset for the next workshop.

Documenting what you create

Jess and Jude of Greenaway and Greenaway will be writing, sketching and taking photographs to help them remember the design ideas, themes and characters that people were inspired to create during the workshop. They will will carefully transport the artworks to be scanned or photographed in studio conditions to evolve the digital designs - please label your artwork carefully so that it can be returned to you.

Photographing the activities

Waltham Forest Council have asked for some photo documentation of the workshops in progress. These will be used on the Waltham Forest Council community blog, on Greenaway & Greenaway and Artillery platforms to thank participants for their involvement. Please let Artillery know on the day if you would not like to be photographed. We will ask anyone who is happy to be photographed to complete a short 'model release' consent form.

Access information

The Glass Room is on the ground floor of Walthamstow Central Library. There is ramped access to the library.

An accessible toilet is available in the Children's Section of the library. It uses a RADAR key available from the library attendants in the Children's Library.

Sensory experience

The workshop does not involve loud recorded sounds or flashing lights.

The meeting room might become noisy while people discuss ideas and make their art work. Anyone is welcome to take a break at any time and sit in another area of the library.

We will be using a variety of materials, including drawing materials, charcoal, clay, and natural ink. Participants will be invited to choose the materials they wish to use.

Poppy and Michael are bringing some magnifying tools to use.
